Licence Renewal

I had to renew my licence last week which I'd nearly forgotten. Here in NSW you can get 1 year, 3 year or a 5 year license. I had previously a Gold 5 year licence. When I went down to the Roads and traffic authority(RTA) to renew my licence I handed it over to the nice lady behind the counter. She looked at it and then looked at me. Then she proceeded to proclaim that I am such a good driver that I qualify for a 50% discount on my renewal.

WTF?

Are you F#&kin serious was my first thought! then woo hoo Half price licence was my second. Heh I just had to laugh, I thought that they should be tearing up my licence not telling me I'm a fantastic driver and giving me a discount. I mean seriously. How do they figure that one out. If you haven't had a speeding ticket in the last 5 years your considered a good driver??? By that standard I could have run 40 people off the road and killed all of them but since I haven't had a ticket I'm considered a good driver.

I'm not knocking a cheap licence but they seriously have no idea about anything. Another great example of a clueless government department right there. I'll let you decide.

  1. Wow you get to choose how long your renewal is? Cool.

In Oregon ours is 8 years I think but under $100 even with the motorcycle endorsement added on. The pleasure of riding on two wheels costs extra.

Maybe she should have called you a "safe driver". It is safe to say you can drive.

  2. Steve:

You didn't mention what the regular fee was.

Recently I renewed my 5 year Driver's License. The regular rate is $75. (5 years), but because I am aged, they reduced it to $17.

    1. Hi Bob
The normal fee was $162 so it was only 81$ after the discount. Your license was dirt cheap.

  3. You are definitely right. Going the speed limit doesn't make you a good rider. Taking courses and continuously trying to improve does. Unfortunately, government, like most schools, have very few methods of determining if someone is actually good at something so they have to take something arbitrary, like tests, or the fact you have no tickets, to decide. In fact, you might have no tickets because you didn't ride at all in the last 5 years.

    1. I think you hit the nail on the head there. They really don't know anything about good driving/riding.

  4. Yep, much to my surprise I got 25% off my Victorian 10 year licence for the same reason as you Steve.

  5. Are you sure it wan't an aged driver discount? After all, you are in the age bracket that starts with a "F" now! Happy birthday...
